The Camden County Board of Commissioners has announced a $5.9 million project to upgrade Newton Avenue in Camden, with construction set to begin in early 2026 and finish by early 2027. The improvements will cover Newton Avenue from Kaighn Avenue and 4th Street to Pine Street and 7th Avenue, aiming to enhance accessibility, safety, and traffic flow for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Commissioner Al Dyer, who serves as the liaison to the Department of Public Works, described the expected impact of the project on the city. “Revitalizing Newton Avenue will not only improve the experience for our commuters and residents, but it also supports the ongoing economic growth and development that we have been seeing in the City of Camden over the last several years,” said Dyer. “As this project moves forward, we ask motorists for their patience and ask everyone to take extra care when traveling through construction zones.”

Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen highlighted how infrastructure upgrades like this one contribute to attracting future investment in Camden. “The City of Camden and our partners at Camden County understand the importance of investing in roadways and infrastructure,” said Carstarphen. “This year we resurfaced Broadway, Ferry Avenue, and began reconstruction of Haddon Avenue. The $5.9 million Newton Avenue project builds upon those efforts. We are improving both neighborhood streets and major roads and this work is setting the stage for additional future development.”

Arthur Barclay, Vice President of Camden City Council and Ward 1 Councilman, stressed that cooperation among local agencies is key for these types of projects. “Projects like the Newton Avenue require collaboration and we have committed partners in place to get the job done,” said Barclay. “That is why we have paved more than three hundred roads citywide since 2021. Improving Camden’s aging infrastructure and roadway conditions will remain a fundamental focus of the Camden County Commissioners, Mayor Carstarphen’s administration, and City Council.”

The planned upgrades include reconstructing asphalt on Newton Avenue between Kaighn/4th Street and Pine/7th Street; adding ADA-accessible curb ramps at all intersections; installing new concrete curbs, sidewalks, driveway aprons; streetscape improvements such as brick pavers, decorative lighting, street trees; enhancements to drainage systems; replacement or upgrading of traffic signal equipment; new traffic striping; regulatory signs; and raised pavement markers.

The county’s Department of Public Works maintains about 1,200 lane miles of roadways plus 50 bridges across Camden County. The department provides services such as highway construction projects—like this one—along with pothole repairs, street sweeping, grass cutting activities, storm drainage maintenance duties throughout Lindenwold-based operations staffed around-the-clock.
