The Camden County Office of Emergency Management has declared a Code Blue Advisory for the county, effective from Friday, January 23 at 7:00 p.m. through Wednesday, January 28 at 7:00 a.m., due to expected dangerously low temperatures forecasted by the National Weather Service. During this period, temperatures are projected to range between 3°F and 30°F.
A Code Blue Advisory is issued when forecasts predict temperatures of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, or wind chills of zero degrees Fahrenheit or below for two hours or more. This advisory prompts municipalities with vulnerable populations to activate their Code Blue response plans to provide shelter and resources for those in need.
“As temperatures fall to dangerously low levels, it is critical that our residents have access to a safe place to stay warm,” said Commissioner Jonathan Young, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Safety. “We urge everyone to check in on vulnerable neighbors, ensure heating systems are working properly, and bring pets indoors.”
The Camden County Office of Emergency Management works with each municipality within the county’s 37 municipalities to coordinate resources during severe weather events. Each community identifies locations where individuals can seek shelter from extreme cold.
Camden County provides various public safety and health services across its municipalities through its seven-member Board of Commissioners who oversee legislative and executive functions. The county also maintains facilities such as parks and libraries while supporting over half a million residents in southern New Jersey. More information about these services can be found on the official website.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions during cold weather:
– Dress in layers using moisture-wicking materials.
– Keep space heaters away from flammable objects and unplug them when not in use.
– Do not use stoves or ovens as heat sources; ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors function properly.
– Bring pets indoors; monitor for signs of distress if they must remain outside.
– Prepare vehicles by checking essential components and carrying an emergency kit.
Those seeking shelter should contact their local municipality or visit www.camdencounty.com/service/health-human-services/warming-centers/ for a list of warming centers. For after-hours assistance with shelter needs, residents can call 2-1-1.
