The Camden County Office of Emergency Management has issued a Code Blue Advisory due to expected dangerously low temperatures. The advisory covers the following periods: from 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, to 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, with a projected temperature of 10°F; from 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, to 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, with a projected temperature of 24°F; and from 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, to 7:00 a.m. on Friday, January 23, with a projected temperature of 11°F.
A Code Blue is declared when the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or wind chills at zero degrees Fahrenheit or lower for two hours or more.
“As temperatures fall to dangerously low levels, it is critical that our residents have access to a safe place to stay warm,” said Commissioner Jonathan Young, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Safety. “We urge everyone to check in on vulnerable neighbors, ensure heating systems are working properly, and bring pets indoors.”
When such advisories are issued, municipalities with vulnerable populations—including those who are homeless—are required to activate their Code Blue response plans. The Camden County Office of Emergency Management works with each municipality within the county so they have the necessary resources for severe weather situations. Each municipality identifies locations where people can seek shelter during these conditions.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions as temperatures drop:
– Dress in layers using moisture-wicking materials.
– Keep space heaters away from flammable items and unplug them when not in use.
– Do not use stoves or ovens as heat sources; check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
– Bring pets indoors if possible and watch for signs of distress if they must be outside.
– Prepare vehicles by checking lights, wipers, tires and brakes; clear snow/ice before driving; carry an emergency kit.
Individuals seeking shelter should contact their local municipality for information about warming centers or visit www.camdencounty.com/service/health-human-services/warming-centers/. For after-hours assistance finding shelter, residents can call 2-1-1.
