The Camden County Office of Emergency Management has issued a Code Blue Advisory for the county, citing forecasts from the National Weather Service that project dangerously low temperatures over several consecutive nights. The advisory will be in effect during the following periods:

– Thursday, January 15, 7:00 p.m. to Friday, January 16, 7:00 a.m., with a projected temperature of 22°F
– Friday, January 16, 7:00 p.m. to Saturday, January 17, 7:00 a.m., projected at 29°F
– Saturday, January 17, 7:00 p.m. to Sunday, January 18, 7:00 a.m., projected at 29°F
– Sunday, January 18, 7:00 p.m. to Monday, January 19, 7:00 a.m., projected at 19°F
– Monday, January 19, 7:00 p.m. to Tuesday, January 20, 7:00 a.m., projected at 15°F

A Code Blue is declared when the National Weather Service expects temperatures of at least freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower) or wind chills of zero degrees Fahrenheit or below for two hours or more.

Commissioner Jonathan Young emphasized the importance of community vigilance during this period. “As temperatures fall to dangerously low levels, it is critical that our residents have access to a safe place to stay warm,” said Young. “We urge everyone to check in on vulnerable neighbors, ensure heating systems are working properly, and bring pets indoors.”

During Code Blue events, municipalities across Camden County are required to activate their response plans for populations who may be especially vulnerable—such as homeless individuals—ensuring shelter is available where needed. The county’s Office of Emergency Management works closely with each municipality within its jurisdiction so that proper resources can be deployed during severe weather conditions.

Camden County serves more than half a million residents across its 37 municipalities in southern New Jersey and operates under the direction of a seven-member Board of Commissioners who oversee public safety and health programs among other services (source). Facilities such as warming centers are maintained throughout the area; individuals seeking shelter are encouraged to contact their local municipality or visit the county website for information on locations.

Residents are also advised on best practices for staying safe during extreme cold:
– Dress in multiple thin layers rather than one heavy coat.
– Use space heaters safely by keeping them away from flammable materials and unplugging them when not in use.
– Never use ovens or stoves as heat sources; ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors function properly.
– Keep pets indoors and monitor them for signs of distress due to cold.
– Prepare vehicles by checking essential equipment and carrying emergency supplies such as blankets and first-aid kits.

After-hours shelter assistance can be accessed by dialing “2-1-1.” For further details about community welfare initiatives—including education and public services—or partnerships supporting these efforts throughout Camden County’s network of parks and facilities (see here).
