Camden County Public Works crews are preparing for a winter storm expected to impact the region starting this evening. The Department of Public Works is focusing on keeping the county’s 1,200 lane miles of road safe and open to motorists.
“Our crews have been called in to ensure that our roads are prepared for this winter weather event,” said Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “As our crews head out to treat the roads, remember to always leave at least six car lengths behind our vehicles while they work and move any cars off the street and into a driveway.”
Weather forecasts indicate that a brief snow shower will occur in the early afternoon, followed by sleet and freezing rain after sunset. These conditions are expected to continue through the night and taper off around midday Saturday. Persistent low temperatures throughout the weekend may result in snow and ice remaining on untreated surfaces for several days.
“There is always the possibility for black ice, especially after the temperatures fall overnight,” Dyer continued. “We know many of our residents will be traveling today for the holidays, so please be use extreme caution on the roads this evening and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.”
The Department of Public Works facility in Lindenwold has over 100 pieces of snow removal equipment ready for deployment. During severe weather, staff will be sent to 12 winter maintenance districts across Camden County to salt and plow as needed. Crews will be dispatched only where necessary according to the county’s response plan.
