Camden County to honor 11 residents with Freedom Medal at annual ceremony

On January 21, Camden County will recognize 11 residents for their volunteer service at the 2026 Camden County Freedom Medal Ceremony. The event will take place at the Collingswood Grand Ballroom in Collingswood, New Jersey.

The Freedom Medal was established by the Board of Commissioners in 2001 to honor individuals who demonstrate ideals and actions reflecting the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recipients are selected based on unpaid contributions that have made a lasting impact on their communities. Since its inception, more than 1,200 county residents have received this recognition.

“The individuals selected for this prestigious award embody the values Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for – service, compassion, and justice,” said Commissioner Jonathan Young. “Through their dedication to serving their community, they have each made a meaningful difference and are helping make Camden County a better place for all.”

This year’s honorees include:

– Jeanette Alvarez of Camden, recognized for her advocacy in helping families access support services.
– Giselle V. Brown of Cherry Hill, an artist whose work has supported cancer research fundraising.
– Captain Vivian Coley of Camden, commander of the Community Outreach Unit who leads local initiatives such as wellness checks and neighborhood cleanups.
– Colonel Ted Gallagher of Cherry Hill, a veteran advocate assisting others with benefits and outreach.
– Father Vincent G. Guest of Camden, Vicar and pastor focused on fostering inclusivity within his parish.
– Rob Jakubowski of Audubon, mayor dedicated to quality-of-life improvements including recreation and sustainability projects.
– Lion James of Gloucester Township, an environmental educator promoting outdoor access for underserved groups through Upstream Alliance.
– Jacquelyn B. Lee of Winslow Township, Deputy Mayor active in civic engagement and senior services.
– Dan Rhoton of Camden, CEO of Hopeworks supporting youth empowerment through training and career readiness programs.
– Dr. Leslie M. Showell of Gloucester Township, educator advancing early literacy through volunteer reading initiatives.
– Brian Truitt of Pennsauken, restaurant owner known for feeding those in need and supporting neighborhood food drives.

Additionally, Cherry Hill resident Jim Peeler will receive the 2026 Camden County Congressional Award during the ceremony.

Camden County operates under a seven-member Board of Commissioners responsible for overseeing government operations across its 37 municipalities in southern New Jersey official website.
