Governor Mikie Sherrill announced on May 6 that $5 million in grants have been awarded to 34 organizations across New Jersey through the NJ World Cup Community Initiative, supporting public fan experiences and community events ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The announcement was made alongside representatives from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), the FIFA World Cup 2026 New York New Jersey Host Committee, and Choose New Jersey.

The initiative aims to bring the excitement and economic benefits of hosting the tournament to neighborhoods throughout the state by funding both large-scale regional events and smaller community gatherings. “The FIFA World Cup 2026 is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase New Jersey on the global stage, and we want to make sure all New Jerseyans can join in on the festivities,” said Governor Mikie Sherrill. “These grants will help ensure that the benefits of hosting the World Cup extend beyond the walls of the stadium. Through this initiative, we are supporting small businesses and empowering communities across New Jersey to create exciting experiences that bring residents and visitors together throughout our state ahead of the tournament, and during the World Cup.”

The NJEDA developed and funded this $5 million program with grant applications administered by Choose New Jersey. Final award decisions were approved by NJEDA leadership. “This initiative, launched by Governor Sherrill, will help turn the world’s largest sporting event into an economic driver for local communities and small businesses across New Jersey,” said Evan Weiss, Chief Executive Officer of NJEDA.

Grant recipients include organizers of multi-day regional events such as Flag Cities led by Meadowlands Regional Chamber & CVB; North to Shore Festival presented by NJPAC; Visit South Jersey’s activations in Camden County; as well as dozens of statewide community experiences ranging from watch parties in Fort Lee to festivals in Asbury Park, Newark, Princeton, Atlantic City, Hoboken, Maplewood, Hillsborough, Linden, Union City and more.

“Choose New Jersey is proud to support this initiative by helping bring these community-driven ideas to life,” said Amy Herbold, President and CEO of Choose New Jersey. Alex Lasry, CEO of NYNJ Host Committee added: “Our goal is to make the World Cup experience accessible and felt in every corner of our region.” All grant-funded events will be part of a region-wide Welcome World Rewards Program where fans can earn points redeemable for merchandise or match tickets through a digital platform.

According to the official website, Camden County supports over 500,000 residents across 37 municipalities with services focused on education, workforce development, public safety health transportation economic development parks libraries nutrition centers operated under a seven-member Board of Commissioners serving staggered three-year terms.
