Did you know that the greatest risk to a child isn’t riding a bus, but approaching or leaving one. STOP means STOP
If you are driving, remember these simple rules:- Yellow flashing lights on a school bus mean slow down, don’t speed up because the bus is preparing to stop. There are likely students waiting to get on the bus or parents waiting nearby to pick up children. -Red flashing lights mean stop and wait at least 20 feet behind of if approaching the bus because children are getting on or off the school bus. Stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.-Even when lights aren’t flashing watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone or bus stop.
Our Gloucester Township Police Patrol and School Resource Officers periodically and randomly follow our buses on their way to school and their way home to help ensure our students are safe. Distracted driving may result in passing a school bus with it's red lights on could place our children in harm's way. Having the officer follow the bus also provides an extra layer of security.
Our officers will also occasionally stop at bus stops to interact with the students to further enhance the relationship between those students and our officers. It is all part of our Gloucester Township Police Community Relations efforts to enhance the relationship with our community that we proudly serve.
